Sumitomo Masatomo (1585-1652), founder of the House of Sumitomo, had started out as a Buddhist priest and went on to later write the “MonjuinShiigaki” which is a document describing the principles for doing business honourably. The document has served as the basis of the Sumitomo Business Spirit and the Sumitomo Business Principles which are as follows :
- Sumitomo shall achieve strength and prosperity by placing prime importance on integrity and sound management in the control of business.
- Sumitomo shall manage its activities with foresight and flexibility in order to cope effectively with the changing times. Under no circumstances, however, shall it pursue easy gains or act imprudently.
